Denota's Journey to Transform Dental Documentation with AI

In a recent interview with Dr. Brandon Labe, DMD, Director of Content at The Future Bite, Denota's co-founders shared their vision for transforming dental documentation through artificial intelligence.

Denota: Revolutionizing Dental Documentation with AI

In the bustling world of dental practices, where practitioners often see upwards of 50 patients daily, administrative tasks can become overwhelming. Enter Denota, a London-based startup that's transforming the way dentists handle their clinical documentation through artificial intelligence.

The Birth of Innovation

The story of Denota begins with a common frustration familiar to many dental professionals. "I didn't get into dentistry to be writing notes and doing administrative tasks," explains Lynn, a practicing dentist and co-founder of Denota. The challenge of choosing between taking a much-needed break between patients or staying late to complete documentation led her to envision a better solution.

Partnering with Gerrard, a software developer, Lynn turned her vision into reality. What started as a personal tool to streamline her own documentation process has evolved into a sophisticated platform that's catching the attention of dental practices across the industry.

A Smart Solution for a Universal Problem

"It's just like opening up Google Docs or Microsoft Word... Open up a new tab, and you're ready to go."

Denota stands out in the dental software landscape with its refreshingly simple approach. Unlike traditional practice management systems that require complex installations and integrations, Denota operates entirely through a web browser. "It's just like opening up Google Docs or Microsoft Word," explains Gerrard. "Open up a new tab, and you're ready to go."

The platform's genius lies in its minimalist input requirements. Dentists provide basic procedure details—tooth number, anesthetic used, or shade selection—either through typing or voice commands. Within seconds, Denota generates comprehensive clinical notes that maintain the practitioner's personal style while ensuring all necessary details are included.

Beyond Basic Note-Taking

What sets Denota apart is its deep understanding of dental contexts. The AI has been specifically trained to handle complex scenarios, from emergency visits to detailed treatment planning discussions. "For emergencies, you're basically doing a full exam, history-taking, X-rays, treatment options discussion, and then the actual treatment. That's a lot to write," Lynn explains. "The AI uses the context very well to generate comprehensive notes that include all necessary details."

The platform particularly shines in documenting treatment option discussions. Whether it's deliberating between immediate and conventional dentures or explaining the pros and cons of various procedures, Denota captures these nuanced conversations efficiently and thoroughly.

Building Trust in AI Technology

"We're building the product in a way that is transparent about what the AI is doing and treating it more as an assistant rather than making decisions for you."

While the benefits are clear, the Denota team acknowledges the challenge of introducing AI technology to a profession that often approaches new technology with careful consideration. Their approach? Transparency and practitioner control.

"We're building the product in a way that is transparent about what the AI is doing and treating it more as an assistant rather than making decisions for you," Gerrard emphasizes. The platform allows practitioners to review, edit, and customize every aspect of their documentation, ensuring they maintain complete control while benefiting from AI efficiency.

Looking to the Future

Denota isn't stopping at note-taking. The team is developing new features, including AI-powered X-ray report writing, in collaboration with imaging companies. However, they maintain a focused approach, prioritizing excellence in their core functionality before expanding into other areas of practice management.

"We're trying now to just focus on the notes, writing and making sure that we have the best product for that feature since it's a big pain point," Lynn explains. Future developments may include financial tracking and additional administrative tools, but only once they've perfected their primary mission: making dental documentation more efficient and accurate.

A Free Trial Away from Transformation

For dentists skeptical about incorporating AI into their practice, Denota offers a simple proposition: a seven-day free trial. "You don't need to have any ego about it," Gerrard suggests. "Just ask yourself if this is going to save you time and money in your day-to-day work."

And just for our subscribers, the team offers a special discount, “I’ve created this coupon for your members that gives them 20% off any Denota plan for their first year. Just use this at checkout: TFB20.”

As artificial intelligence continues to reshape healthcare, Denota represents a thoughtful approach to innovation—one that respects dental professionals' expertise while helping them focus more on what matters most: patient care.
